There are a lot of rules and regulations surrounding our building industry. Some people, usually corner cutters and sharks try to get around these – you often read in the local news about someone who’s built something bigger than they should and have not applied for planning permission. They try to hide it and seem amazed when the authorities find out. There was a fantastic case the other year of a farmer who literally hid his new leisure rooms behind and under a massive haystack, hoping to gradually remove it bit by bit so the neighbours wre used to a blot on their landscape gradually changing shape and reducing to a more attractive item. It did not work. He had to answer a court summons, which he lost, and also the appeal which he also lost. It wet as far as the supreme court. The rules are there to protect the safety of everyone concerned and also to protect the land and green belt nature of unbuilt on land.
